Crete has been on the global golf map since 1994, thanks to the 9-hole par-3 course of the Porto Elounda Golf & Spa Resort, part of the Elounda Collection Hotels & Resorts and since 2002, it has also featured the internationally recognized 18-hole course of the Peninsula.
These courses hosted the 17th Porto Elounda Pro-Am tournament from October 4-6, featuring teams made up of one professional and three amateur players each.
Thanks to the handicap system, the sport allows players of all levels to compete on equal terms, meaning that prizes are not just awarded to the best players, but to those who performed best on those days.
The winning team in the team event at the Peninsula course was the team from Aegean Airlines, led by professional Eugene Papadopoulos, narrowly defeating the team from the Crete Golf Club, led by professional Henrik Engdahl.
In the individual competition, which took place at the Elounda course, victor among the professionals was Themis Guinis, setting a new course record (-3), while the top amateur was Dinos Maltezakis.
Additionally, this year, for the first time under the auspices of Aegean Airlines, a foot-golf event was held, using soccer balls and large holes on the specially designed golf course in Elounda. The event featured former Greek national football players who won Euro 2004: Takis Fyssas, Yourkas Seitaridis, Angelos Basinas, Sotiris Kyrgiakos, and Giannis Goumas partnered with golfers in the tournament. The winners, after a tie and playoff, were the team of Sotiris Kyrgiakos and Panagiotis Samvaziontis.
As every year and at every golf event in Greece, the major sponsor was AEGEAN Airlines, along with Hertz-Autohellas of the Vassilakis group, while significant sponsorship came from the major partners of the Porto Elounda Golf & Spa Resort: Elpedison in the electricity sector, GMG Construction in construction, and Sychem in central mechanical infrastructures. Wine was provided by Ktima Kokotou, beers by Heineken, soft drinks by Coca-Cola 3E, and coffee by Nespresso. The olive oil on the tables was donated by Vedema, and the cosmetics for the baths by Apivita. The trophies were created and provided by the Vourakis house, while the printed materials were offered by the Lavrentakis printing house.
